The Bismarck and the Tirpitz, the only two ships of this class, were laid down in 1936 .

Ngày 21 tháng 5 1941, trong 1 trận chiến chỉ kéo dài 17 phút, Bismarck đã đánh đấm Battle Cruiser The Hood chỉ với 1 loạt pháo trúng đích và gây thiệt hại nặng nề cho Battleship Prince of Wales của Hải quân Anh. 1 tuần sau Bismarck bị đánh đấm bằng ngư lôi trong 1 cuộc chiến không cân sức giữa 3 Battleship, 2 Carrier, 4 Cruiser và 7 Destroyer dưới sự yểm trợ tối đa của máy bay thả ngư lôi của Anh. Bismarck đã hứng chịu gần 3k viên đạn (hơn 700 viên 14" từ Battleship King Georg V và 16" từ Battleship Rodney [Nelson class]), nhưng chỉ có 4 viên là thủng được giáp của nó. Là Thiết giáp hạm "bự" nhất được đóng trên thế giới. Nhưng đã không chứng tỏ được sức mạnh của mình trong chiến dịch Midway. Sứ mạng cuối cùng của Yamato là thực hiện cuộc tấn công tự sát ở Okinawa, bị đánh đấm sau khi nhận 10 quả bomb và 12 toperdo từ cuộc tấn công 400 máy bay của Mỹ.

Có tất cả 5 tàu thuộc class Yamato được lập kế hoạch đóng, nhưng chỉ có 3 chiếc được hạ thủy là Yamato, Musahi và Shinano. Chiếc cuối của họ này là Super Yamato với pháo 508 mm nhưng bị hủy dự án vào năm 1942.
